Company History
Scott Nash started MOM's in 1987 at the age of 22 with an initial investment of $100. MOM's was initially called Organic Foods Express (OFE) and operated as a home-delivery/mail order company out of Scott‘s mom's garage. In 1987, OFE rented a 900 square foot warehouse in Scott‘s home-town of Beltsville, Maryland.
Two years later, OFE moved its location to a 2,000 square foot space in Rockville, MD with the intent of opening a retail outlet. Initially, OFE opened Friday through Sunday to the public while conducting home deliveries and mail order Monday through Thursday.
Eventually, as the retail aspect of OFE increased, the delivery/mail order was phased out. OFE opened to the public seven days a week for retail sales. Our niche then, as it is today, was high quality organic produce, discount prices, and exceptional customer service.
In 1996, after being closed for six months to prepare for expansion, Organic Foods Express reopened as MOM‘s in a 6,000 square foot location in Rockville within a half-mile of the previous location.
In 1998, after annual revenue increases of more than 50% (generated solely from word-of-mouth referrals), MOM‘s doubled its size by expanding into the adjacent vacant space.
In August, 2000, MOM's - College Park opened. While searching for this 2nd location, many real estate "experts" suggested that a MOM‘s in College Park (Prince George‘s County) would never work. Being just 2 miles from Scott's childhood home, he knew the area well and was not deterred. Within 2 years of opening the College Park MOM‘s, it now grosses more revenue per foot than any other MOM‘s location.
In October, 2002, MOM's opened a 3rd location in Alexandria, VA in the Arlandria/Del Ray area. It is located in a depressed area, an Enterprise Zone. MOM‘s has been and is currently hailed as a major catalyst for positive change in that area. The community there has reacted very positively and sales tripled the first year of being open. We have been very pleased with the continued success of the Alexandria MOM's.
MOM's has continued to grow with the opening of the Jessup location in Oct. 2006; the Frederick store in April of 2007; Bowie in February of 2010; and MOM's Timonium on Memorial Day Weekend (May 28-30) 2011. We look forward to serving more communities in the Washington-Baltimore region in coming years, with plans to open a new store in Herndon, VA in autumn of 2011; followed by new stores in Waldorf, MD and Merrifield, VA in 2012.
As MOM's grows, we remain committed to our purpose, our mission, and our reason for existing... To Protect and Restore the Environment.
