MOM's Stops the Stuff to Reduce Waste

Inspired by the popular internet video the Story of Stuff, MOM's launched this initiative in April 2008 to greatly reduce the amount of trash we add to the waste stream. In the first six months we successfully brought our company wide-recycling rate up to 85% of our total waste, keeping more than 825 tons of materials out of the landfill!

In the year of 2008, MOM’s recycled, composted, or reused...

  • 13,041 CUBIC FEET OF BUBBLE WRAP  -- If you could stack the bubble wrap we recycled it would fill a space the size of 10 Empire State Buildings!
  • 147,150 POUNDS or almost 74 TONS  OF PRODUCE TRIMMINGS -- This weighs about as much as 15 adult elephants!
  • 875 GALLONS OF BATTERIES -- Enough to fill 15 bathtubs!
  • 13,041 POUNDS OF PLASTIC BAGS -- This many plastic bags would fill 12 neighborhood swimming pools!
  • 20,412 CUBIC FEET OF PACKING PEANUTS -- This is enough packing peanuts to completely fill twenty four 17 foot U-Haul trucks!
  • 29,715 POUNDS OF COMMINGLED ITEMS (CANS, BOTTLES, ETC) -- This would be equivalent to almost thirty 8 yd dumpsters. These are the kind we have at all of our stores.
  • 18,953 POUNDS OF MIXED PAPER -- That's enough paper to fill more than three thousand wheelbarrows!
  • 135 BOXES OF C.F.L LIGHTBULBS -- We stopped counting the actual lightbulbs after we hit 5000, but we estimate that this many boxes would be enough to fill three 17' U-Haul trucks!
